Baron Georges Haussmann (1809-1891) was a French magistrate best known for the controversial rebuilding of Paris when he was prefect of the Seine under Napoleon III between 1853 and 1870. Before attaining this position, he held various other government positions throughout France, including being the prefect of the Gironde during the Second Republic. Following his dismissal from the prefecture of the Seine, Haussmann held various positions in both the public and private sectors. From...
